Chapter 10: From Shadows to Sanctuary
I’m just sitting here in my favorite corner of my room, staring out the window and... thinking.
You know how it was. We lived right next to these massive, glittering VIP houses, but our own street felt like a completely different, forgotten world. I used to stare at those dark, overgrown empty plots next to my house and think, “Why does it feel like the shadows are winning?”
It’s exhausting, isn't it? Constantly wondering if you’re actually safe when you step out of your front door, or if you're just living on borrowed time and lucky breaks. I spent so many nights with a tight knot of anxiety in my chest, looking at those streetlights the goons deliberately turned off, feeling like our dignity as common citizens had been traded away for someone else's political reach.
But then I stop, take a deep breath, and look at where we are now.
We finally did it. We got the guards.
I keep playing it over and over in my head—how such a simple, practical step has completely changed the entire energy of this lane. Is it just the physical presence of a guard, or is it the deeper, more profound fact that we finally stood our ground and said, “enough”?
My mind won't stop racing tonight, but for the first time in a very long time, it’s racing with hope instead of fear. The contrast is dizzying. I look out into the night now, and the darkness doesn't feel like it's waiting to swallow me whole anymore. It feels like I can finally breathe without constantly checking over my shoulder, without calculating the exact time of sunset before deciding to walk home.
I’m probably overthinking it—as I always do—but to me, this feels like we finally took our power back from the people who tried to make us feel small in our own neighborhood. We didn't start a war; we just built a shield.
Anyway, just some late-night thoughts from my cozy corner. What do you think about this change? Does a simple step like this actually change a place, or is it the mindset that shifts first? Please share your thoughts in the comments below!
